People who have signigicantly influenced Koorie Education in
Victoria.
Bruce McGuinness
Bruce
McGuinness was a member of the steering committee that established
the VAECG in 1976. Bruce became the first Executive Officer for
the Victorian Aboriginal Education Consultative Group upon its
inception and remained in the position until 1978. When he left
in 1978, Bruce went into the area of Aboriginal health, and was
one of the people who established Koori Kollij. Bruce's expertise
and community-based vision were fundamental in shaping the VAECG
in its early years of operation.
Dianne Fitzgerald
Dianne
Fitzgerald was one of the first Aboriginal teachers employed in
Aboriginal Education Services as a Resource Teacher. Dianne acted
in the position of Executive Officer of the VAECG for six months
in 1978. In 1979, Dianne completed the Teacher Education for the
Urban Aboriginal Situation, a review for the VAECG for the National
Teacher Education Enquiry. Dianne has continued her involvement
in Aboriginal Education on a State and Commonwealth level.
Esme Halden (Moira/Wiradjuri)
Esme
Halden nee Bamblett graduated from Toorak Teachers College in
1978 with a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) and, became Executive
Officer of the VAECG in 1979 remaining in the position until 1980.
Over the past twenty-two years, Esme has continued her involvement
in Koorie Education in a variety of roles, including: Resource
Teacher, Teacher in Manega Aboriginal Annexe, TAFE Liaison Officer,
Cross Sectoral Co-ordinator, Koorie Education Development Officer
and Research Manager for the Institute of Koorie Education.
Alan Brown
Alan
Brown was involved in Koorie Education since the 1970's. He was
the Executive Officer of the VAECG for one year in 1981, after
which he left and was instrumental in establishing Koori Kollij.
Alan was the Co-ordinator of Koori Kollij for eight years until
its closure. Although Alan has been involved in the area of Koorie
health for a number of years, he maintained his interest in Koorie
Education and was the President of the Melbourne Aboriginal Education
Association Incorporated for ten years. Alan is currently the
Manager of Bunjilaka, at the Museum of Victoria.
Gary Murray (Wamba Wamba, Dhuudhuroa,
Dja Dja Wurrung, Baraparapa, Yapagalk, Yorta Yorta, and Wergaia)
Gary
Murray was Executive Officer of the VAECG from 1982-1984. He was
a founding member of Camp Jungai Co-operative in 1977. He was
Administrative Secretary of Camp Jungai. Gary became the first
Liaison Officer with the Department of Social Security. After
he left the VAECG, from 1985-1987, Gary worked at the Lake Condah
and District Aboriginal Co-operative as the Administrator. In
1987, Gary worked with the Murray River Regional Aboriginal Land
Council and then from 1987-1990, was Co-ordinator of the Moama
Local Aboriginal Land Council. In 1989-1990, Gary worked with
the Wamba Wamba Local Aboriginal Land Council. Since 1990, he
has been involved in Consultancy and Project work.
Lionel Bamblett (Wiradjuri/Yorta
Yorta)
Lionel
Bamblett became the 1st General Manager of the newly formed VAEAI
in 1985 - with a 2 year study break in 1991. He remained in the
position and is now the General Manager of the VAEAI. Lionel has
played a significant role in the negotiations with the different
Ministers of Education for the implementation of policy that impacts
on Koorie students in Victoria.
