Professor Colin Bourke (Gamilaroi)
In
1956, Colin Bourke graduated from Geelong Teacher's College and
in 1959 was appointed Head Teacher at Rubicon Junction Primary
School. In 1971, Colin became the first Aborigine appointed as
a Principal in Victoria when he was appointed to Whittlesea Primary
School. In 1975, Colin became the Supervisor of the newly established
Aboriginal Education Services and during this time, he established
many of the programs that continue today.
Colin Bourke was the first Chairperson of the VAECG from 1976-1980.
As Supervisor of Aboriginal Education Services, Colin was a member
of the steering committee that established the VAECG. Colin left
AES and worked at the Centre for Research into Aboriginal Affairs
at Monash University, but was elected the Chairperson of the VAECG.
Colin has been involved in Aboriginal Education at local, state
and national level in various capacities, since 1956. Returning
from Interstate University and Public Service Positions in 1999,
Colin is now the Adjunct Professor at Monash University.
Alf Bamblett (Moira/Wiradjuri)
Alf
Bamblett has been involved in Koorie Education in Victoria since
1978 when he first became involved with the VAECG. Alf was elected
Chairman of the VAECG in 1981 because of his extensive interest
in Aboriginal Education. Alf served as a member of the National
Aboriginal Education Committee for two terms while he worked in
the area of Aboriginal employment. He was member of the Aboriginal
Education Policy Taskforce in 1988 that informed the development
of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
Policy. Alf was the first ATSIC Commissioner elected for Victoria
in 1992. He has worked tirelessly in the area of Aboriginal Affairs
for over twenty years, serving on many local, state and national
Committees. Alf was instrumental on the ATSIC committee who negotiated
the funding for programs after the Royal Commission into Aboriginal
Deaths in Custody 339 recommendations were handed down.
