Introduction
The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI)
was established in 1976 as the Victorian Aboriginal Education Consultative
Group. VAEAI is a statewide organisation consisting of eight regions.
These regions are divided on the basis of clan and community groupings
and a number of Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups (LAECG's)
comprise each region.
In the early 1990s two significant and innovative developments
took place which significantly enhanced VAEAI's functions as an
organisation. The first being, the formalisation of the relationship
between the Victorian Koorie community and the Department of Education
through the Partnership in Education: Koorie Education Policy.
The second was the formal recognition of VAEAI as holding the
status of an Industry Training Board. Taken together these resulted
in the recognition of Koorie community protocols within the education
and training systems.
There have been many other innovative policies, programs and projects
incorporating appropriate Koorie values that have been adopted in
Victoria which are reported in the following sections of this report.
